Admit it, you’ve been to at least a dozen weddings and walked away with a cute little trinket that you never used. Each one of them ended up in the trash, am I right?
The idea behind wedding favors is a good one. It’s a way to thank your guests for joining you in the celebration, a small memento of their time with you on your big day. I’ve seen a guest or two look around bewildered, searching for the gift they surely knew would be waiting for them at the table (Don’t worry, they were simply placed at a separate table).
The key to helping this tradition have less of an impact on our environment is choosing gifts, made from eco-friendly materials, which most of your guests will actually use. Here are a few ideas:
* Give something edible – Nothing beats homemade goodies. Thank your guests with something sweet, like gourmet lollipops or caramels (The Groovy Baker has really delicious flavors like Strawberry lemongrass and Chambord with vanilla bean), cupcakes and cookies. Support local farmers & small businesses by giving jams, jellies & honey. Choose organic whenever possible.
* Wine (Choose a vineyard that uses screw caps instead of corks). Personalized labels are a nice touch (Check out Design Circus). This is also a great idea for table numbers.
* Handmade, all natural soaps
* Plants: Give tree seedlings, flowers or herbs that your guests can keep potted or replant outside. (At Tree Beginnings, you can choose from natural burlap or eco-friendly boxes)
* Seeds: Loose or in plantable paper, which is available in dozens of shapes, like hearts and butterflies.
* In lieu of: Make a donation to your favorite charity or plant a tree in your guests’ names.
Remember to choose eco-friendly packaging too. Use, biodegradable plant-based plastics; seed, recycled and kraft paper boxes; bags made from natural and recycled fabrics and avoid tags if you can to eliminate extra paper waste.
